How much does it cost to build an app with AI? Three parts
The cost has three parts: the plan, the usage the plan meters, and services outside the plan. Every builder read for this guide sells plans as subscriptions, with monthly or yearly billing. Usage is where the bills differ. Overskill and Lovable meter credits, Base44 meters message credits and integration credits, and Bolt meters tokens.
This page counts credits and tokens, not dollars, so it works as a map of the bill rather than a price list.
Plan cost: what the monthly fee buys
A plan is mostly an allowance. What differs is how big it is and whether it can be topped up.
- Overskill: Starter includes 2,500 credits a month and Studio 12,000. Plan credits do not carry over; credit packs do.
- Lovable: paid plans add a credit balance, and the free plan gets a daily grant of 5 build credits, up to 30 a month.
- Base44: message credits run from 25 a month on Free to 1,200 on Elite, with integration credits listed separately.
- Bolt: the Free plan lists 1 million tokens a month, and paid plans start at 10 million, with unused tokens rolling over one extra month.
Usage cost: what makes the bill grow
Revisions are the main driver. Overskill puts a typical change at 400 to 1,500 credits and a fresh build at 2,000 to 8,000. Its terms add that a generation which errors still uses credits and is not refunded separately.
Project size and traffic matter too. Bolt says most token use comes from syncing the project's files to the AI, so a larger project uses more tokens per message. Lovable says build costs vary with task complexity and that apps with significant traffic can start drawing on your balance for hosting. Apps that run AI features, email or connected services spend credits after launch as well.
Hidden costs outside the plan: services, payments and storage
Some costs never appear in the plan allowance.
- Connected services: Base44 says third-party services you connect, such as Stripe, SendGrid or OpenAI, bill you directly.
- Payments: Overskill customer payments run on Whop at Whop's published rates, and its pricing page lists payment processing fees as a budget item.
- Storage: past the included amounts, Overskill bills database and file storage from your credits.
- Top-ups: when the balance reaches zero, Overskill pauses generation until you buy a pack or change plan.
A worked credit budget for one small client portal
Assume one fresh build and ten changes, using Overskill's typical figures: a 3,000-credit build, within its 2,000 to 8,000 range, plus ten changes of 700 credits each. That is 3,000 plus 7,000, or 10,000 credits.
On Starter, with 2,500 credits a month, that is four months of allowance. Plan credits do not carry over, so the 3,000-credit build alone is more than one Starter month holds; part of it would come from the 500 credits a new account starts with or from a credit pack. On Studio, with 12,000 a month, it fits in one month with 2,000 credits left, and plan credits that are left over expire. The U.S. Small Business Administration's startup-cost guidance sorts expenses into one-time and monthly and says to count at least one year of monthly expenses. Applied here, the build credits are the front-loaded part, while the plan, email, storage and connected services recur.
